The Bra-Cups refer back to the very origins of feeding. In this light, bras serve as the definitive food packaging, and by capturing them in porcelain they become bra-cups, the ultimate food container.
Three different cups were made, one from a small bra size A, a medium one size D, and a large one F. This was done as a means to explore the visual and tactile properties of lace when translated into porcelain. Porcelain was chosen so that its translucence could emphasize the lightness of the cups, but most importantly due to its fine structure, which allows it to record the most minute detail of lace. Conversely, the fine grain of porcelain also allows for creating, in conjunction with the glaze, a butter-soft smooth interior of the cup, in sharp contrast to its exterior.
Since the cups don’t have feet and cannot be put down, the user is asked to really use their hands to hold the Bra-Cups, and are therefore encouraged to feel its lace and shape. Only when no longer in use can they be put away. The Bra-Cups have their place hanging together with the other kitchen utensils. Thus the lace decoration can be visually further appreciated. Most importantly, it creates a visual metaphor, indicating the possibility that one of the most beautiful and mysterious feeding acts are also of a purely utilitarian nature. In order to develop the metaphor further, they are hung on what can be seen as meat hooks.
